But one thing led to another, and here I am, writing this to you.

So, what caused a girl like me to start this crazy scholarship journey? Well, I didn’t found Scholarship Navigator out of thin air. I spent the last 8 years figuring out how to crack the “scholarship code”.

During high school, I realized that if I didn’t figure out a way to pay for college, I’d have some hefty student loans to deal with and crippling debt straight out of college.

I was determined to find a better way to fund my college education.

Despite not knowing where to begin, I set to work, applying for a variety of scholarships while figuring out winning techniques and methods through trial and error.

My very first scholarship win earned me $100 and I was ecstatic. 

Now…I’m sure there were plenty of people who could have told me, “Ryan…are you kidding? That’s not even going to buy you a college textbook.” And they would have been right.

But this small taste of success told me something different.

If I could win $100, why not $1,000? $10,000? $100,000?!

And so it began. I started figuring out the best possible ways to find scholarships with lower-competition (I did NOT want to be competing against hundreds or thousands of other students). And I also figured out how to tell my personal story in applications and essays in a way that compelled the judges to choose me (even though, to be honest, I wasn’t the best writer).

Even though I started from ground zero, I ultimately earned over $150,000 in scholarships, and didn’t spend a dime of my own money (or my parents’!) on college bills. 

My scholarships even covered a semester in Washington, D.C., books, fees, and other incidental costs.

Soon, family friends started asking me, “Hey, can you help us and teach us what you did?” And ever since then, I’ve found so much joy and fulfillment in encouraging, guiding, and mentoring other families and students in the scholarship process.
